Tripe has a reputation for being the smelliest thing in the freezer, but it's also one of the most nutrient-dense things you can put in your dog's bowl. If you've been raw feeding for a while and haven't tried it yet, here's why it's worth getting past the smell.
What actually is tripe?
Tripe is the lining of an animal's stomach, most commonly beef, but you'll also see it from lamb or deer. In raw feeding, "tripe" almost always means green tripe, which is the unwashed, unbleached stomach straight from the animal, still containing partially digested plant matter and the natural enzymes and bacteria involved in digestion.
That's completely different to the tripe you'd find in a supermarket for human consumption, which is bleached and scalded to make it presentable — and in the process, stripped of almost everything that makes it valuable to a dog.
Why raw feeders rate it so highly
Natural digestive enzymes. Green tripe contains enzymes like amylase, lipase, and protease, which support your dog's own digestion, useful for dogs with sensitive stomachs or those transitioning onto raw.

Green tripe vs. bleached tripe — don't get caught out
This is the one thing worth being careful about. If you're ever tempted to pick up tripe from a supermarket or butcher rather than a raw feeding supplier, check it isn't bleached. White, scalded tripe has been through a chemical process that destroys the enzymes and bacteria that make green tripe worthwhile — nutritionally, it's a different product wearing the same name.
